How Many Ashwagandha Gummies Should You Take a Day?

Take the number of gummies your label says, which is usually one or two a day, depending on how much ashwagandha each gummy holds. Ours is one gummy a day with a meal. Take it at the same time every day, give it several weeks, and don't double up: more ashwagandha isn't better, and a gummy holds other nutrients that have daily limits of their own.

It's one of the most common questions we get, and the reason it confuses people is simple: two jars of "ashwagandha gummies" can hold very different amounts. Here is how to work out the right number for the jar in your hand, when to take them, and when more becomes too much.

Why the number of gummies changes from brand to brand

The amount of ashwagandha isn't set by the gummy. It's set by the recipe. One brand puts the full daily amount in a single gummy. Another spreads it across two or three, which is why their label says "serving size: 2 gummies".

So the question isn't really "how many gummies". It's "how many gummies make one serving on this label". Look for two lines on the supplement facts panel:

  • Serving size. How many gummies count as one daily serving
  • Amount per serving. The milligrams of ashwagandha (and anything else) in that serving

That also tells you how long a jar lasts. A jar of 60 with a two-gummy serving is a 30-day supply, not 60. It's the same label arithmetic that decides whether gummy supplements are worth taking in the first place.

How much ashwagandha per day?

The research on ashwagandha uses concentrated root extracts taken every day for weeks. A 2022 review of 12 randomized trials found that this daily use lowered measured stress compared with a placebo, and most of those trials ran for about eight weeks.

What doesn't carry over well is a single "right" milligram number. Extracts differ in how concentrated they are, so 200 mg of one extract isn't the same as 200 mg of another. That's why the most reliable guide is the label on the product you're taking: the maker has set the serving around their own ingredient.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that most studies lasted up to about three months, and that's the period the safety data covers best.

How to take ashwagandha gummies

  1. Take the serving on the label, once a day. For ours, that's one gummy
  2. Take it with a meal. A few people get an upset stomach on an empty one
  3. Pick a time and keep it. Morning or evening both work. If ashwagandha makes you sleepy or noticeably relaxed, move it to the evening
  4. Give it time. The trials measured results after weeks of daily use, not days, and what ashwagandha gummies do builds gradually rather than in a single day
  5. If you miss a day, just carry on. Don't take two the next day to catch up

Can you take too much ashwagandha?

Yes, and with gummies there are two things to watch.

More ashwagandha isn't better

Taking more than the label says doesn't speed anything up. In a 2020 review of the human studies, the side effects reported by more than 5 percent of people were drowsiness, stomach discomfort and loose stools, all mild. Higher amounts make those more likely, not the benefits faster.

There is also a rare but serious one. Cases of liver injury linked to ashwagandha supplements have been reported. Stop taking it and see a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, itching or unusual tiredness.

The other nutrients in the gummy have limits too

This is the part most people miss. Many ashwagandha gummies also carry vitamins and minerals, and those have daily upper limits that don't change just because they come in a gummy.

Ours, for example, has 30 mg of zinc in each gummy. The upper limit for zinc for adults is 40 mg a day from all sources combined. One gummy sits comfortably under it. Two would put you over, before you count any zinc from food or a multivitamin. So stay at one, and if you take other supplements, add up the zinc across all of them.

Is it OK to take ashwagandha gummies every day?

Daily is how ashwagandha was studied and how it's meant to be taken. The best safety data covers up to about three months of use. If you plan to keep taking it for longer, mention it at your next doctor's appointment, especially if you take other medication.

Who should check with a doctor first

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, talk to your doctor before taking ashwagandha if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding. NCCIH advises avoiding ashwagandha during both
  • Take thyroid medication, since ashwagandha may raise thyroid hormone levels
  • Take sedatives, sleep medication, or medication for blood pressure, blood sugar, seizures or the immune system
  • Have an autoimmune condition, a thyroid condition, liver problems or a hormone-sensitive condition
  • Have surgery coming up

How many of our gummies to take

One a day, with a meal. Each of our Ashwagandha Gummies carries the full daily serving, with every amount printed on the jar:

Per 1 gummy Amount
Ashwagandha 225 mg
L-theanine 200 mg
Vitamin B6 1.7 mg
Vitamin D3 25 mcg
Vitamin B12 50 mcg
Zinc 30 mg
Calories and sugar 10 calories, under 1 g sugar
Gummies per jar 30, a one-month supply

The 200 mg of L-theanine is the same daily amount used in a four-week trial on stress and sleep quality, which is why one gummy is enough. It's also why ashwagandha and L-theanine pair so well: the two work on different timescales. They're made by hand in small batches in Holmes County, Ohio, and sit in our calm and focus range.

Frequently asked questions

How many ashwagandha gummies should I take a day?

The number on your label's serving size, usually one or two. It depends on how much ashwagandha each gummy holds. For ours, it's one gummy a day with a meal.

Can I take 2 ashwagandha gummies a day?

Only if the label's serving size is two. If one gummy is a full serving, taking two doubles everything in it, including vitamins and minerals with daily limits. With ours, two gummies would put your zinc above the adult upper limit of 40 mg a day.

Is it OK to take ashwagandha gummies every day?

Yes, daily is how it was studied. Most research ran for up to about three months. If you plan to take it longer, mention it to your doctor, especially if you take other medication.

Should I take ashwagandha gummies in the morning or at night?

Either works. Take it at the same time every day, with a meal. If it makes you feel relaxed or drowsy, the evening is the better fit.

How long do ashwagandha gummies take to work?

The trials measured results after several weeks of daily use, most often around eight. Some people notice a calmer baseline within two to four weeks.

What happens if I take too many ashwagandha gummies?

The most likely effects are drowsiness, an upset stomach or loose stools. Taking several at once also means a large dose of the other nutrients in the gummy. If you've taken far more than the label says and feel unwell, call your doctor or Poison Control (1-800-222-1222 in the US).
